Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) is a centre-left Indian political party which is politically present mainly in Bihar and Jharkhand. The party currently holds 20 seats in Lok Sabha making it the fifth largest party. The veteran socialist leader George Fernandes is the mentor and benefactor of the party.
The janata Dal (United) party was formed on 30 October 2003, with the fusion of the Sharad Yadav camp of the Janata Dal, the Lokshakti Party and the Samata Party.
The origin of the party goes back prior to the 1999 General Elections. A camp led by then Karnataka Chief Minister J. H. Patel had given support to the National Democratic Alliance, leading to the split in the Janata Dal and therefore leading to the formation of Janata Dal (Secular) under H. D. Deve Gowda, who wanted to remain equidistant from both national parties; and another Janata Dal under Sharad Yadav. George Fernandes and Nitish Kumar led the Samata party and on 30 October 2003, and merged with the Janata Dal. The merged body hence formed was called Janata Dal (United). The symbol of the party is the arrow symbol derived from Janata Dal (United) and the green and white flag from the Samata Party. The integrating force is believed to be the common opposition to Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar particularly after the Rashtriya Janata Dal embraced Samata Party antagonists like Raghunath Jha into the party.
In November 2005 the JD(U) party with its accord partner, the BJP along; defeated the RJD-led UPA government in Bihar. Nitish Kumar leader of Janata Dal(U) now heads the government. JD(U) and BJP split since 16th june 2013.
